Open House

We are very excited to welcome potential SHU Pirates and their families at Open House on Sunday, February 19th! There will be RA-led tours throughout the day in Boland, Aquinas and in Xavier Halls. Blue Crew will be leading tours across campus and through the University Center. Remember to say hello and be welcoming to our guests while in the halls, but also around campus! See your hall director if you have any questions.

Remembering: The Boland Hall Fire

Every year on January 19th, the University stops and remembers. We remember the lives of three students who tragically lost their lives in a fire which took place in Boland Hall on January 19th, 2000. We remember the 58 students who were injured.   We remember the names of the three boys Aaron Karol, Frank Caltabilota and John Giunta. Every day we remember these young men by the ringing of the Jubilee Bell tower and the Remember Circle in front of Boland Hall.

Lamps, extension cords and multi-plug adaptors, Oh my!

Starting the week of the 23rd, in hall staff will be starting curtsey checks! An RA and a professional staff member will be going into each rooms to look for any items or actions that are prohibited as per our fires safety manual. If an item (lamp with a plastic shade, multi-plug adaptors, etc.) is found during this time, the resident will be asked to take the item home with them the next time they go home. If a prohibited action is found (posters taking up more than 25% of a wall, belongings on top of a wardrobe, etc.) residents will have 24 hours to rectify the issue.

Of course, this is not a comprehensive list of prohibited items or actions. All residents received a copy of this booklet at check-in and should read and become familiar with the policies outlined in it.

If a resident has any questions, they can reach out to their hall staff or their resident assistant.

Clean up, clean up, everyone, everywhere!

As we wrap up the fall semester, HRL would like to remind residents to clean up their rooms. If your roommate isn’t coming back to housing next semester, it is important that you clean up your side of the room, as you could be getting a new roommate! Remember, HRL reserves the right to reassign Residents during the semester in order to consolidate vacant spaces and to increase room occupancy.

Help us welcome our new students’ home at the Hall! Please put all of your belongings on your side of the room, clean up the bathroom, and if you feel so inclined, write them a welcome note! If you have any questions, please see your RA or in Hall Staff!!

1.8 GPA policy and procedures

Resident students who wish to remain in Housing must maintain a GPA requirement of at least a 1.8.In the Spring Semester, if a student’s  GPA falls under this requirement, that student will meet with a  member of the HRL staff to discuss ways to improve their GPA, as well as resources on campus. Before the end of the meeting, the HRL staff member will schedule a follow up meeting to ensure success!
