Waiting…

So everyone has received their room assignments and is so excited about who their roommate is. Well everyone except you, or so it seems. But have no fear, you aren’t the only one without an assignment right now. You are the biggest class we have has since 2010 and when we say big we mean BIG! We have had more than 1200 incoming freshman apply for housing, which is more than we have ever had.  We know that you are probably upset, anxious, nervous, and worried about what will happen between now and the beginning of the semester.  As of right now, anyone who has not yet been assigned a room is on a pending wait list but this does not mean that you will not get housing. The wait list is done by distance from home to campus which means that someone coming from California will get assigned a room before someone who is from New Jersey. Every time a student cancels his or her room we immediately fill that bed with the next person on the wait list. We get cancellations every day so the wait list is getting smaller and smaller every day. We want to make sure that you know that in the past five years we have always been able to clear our wait lists before the first day of classes and some of those wait lists had up to 500 names on them. We are pros at what we do but please, be patient with us. We are working diligently to get everyone into a bed because we want to make everyone happy and we don’t want you to miss out on the opportunities that come with living on campus. You will be getting an email in the next fews days regarding the wait list and all of the information that you need. Stick with us, everything will work out.

Don’t forget…Keep Calm and Pirate On!

Pack Attack

We hope everyone is as excited as we are for Pirate Adventure! This may be your first time ever sleeping in a college dorm or you may be an old pro from summer sports camps! Either way we wanted to give you some suggestions of what to pack and the necessities you might forget because we know how stressful packing can be!

-Comfortable clothes-We know you want to impress your fellow peers but make sure you are comfortable…you will be spending a lot of time outside and you don’t want to be uncomfortable

-Sweatshirt-the res halls are all air conditioned so make sure you have one because it will be chilly (or “forget” to pack one so you have to buy a brand new SHU sweatshirt at the bookstore!)

-Sheets-Twin XL are your best bet-if you don’t have any yet Target is a great place to buy a set!

-Blanket and pillow-this is a dorm room not a hotel, we don’t have any extras so don’t forget these important things! (we won’t judge you if you bring your favorite stuffed animal along too-it’s okay you aren’t the only Freshman in college with a favorite teddy bear)

-Alarm clock-okay most of you have phones with alarms on them but either way make sure it’s set so you don’t miss out on any of the activities

-Chargers-no one can live without their phone and who wants to be the one with the dead phone who can’t tweet @SetonHallHRL every second of Pirate Adventure? Don’t forget these!

-Towels-don’t be “that person” who forgot to bring a towel and now smells because they couldn’t take a shower

-Toiletries-EVERYTHING-hair brush, shampoo, toothpaste, makeup, face wash, soap, toothbrush (you won’t have a concierge to run to if you forget your shaving cream so make sure you have everything before you leave)

-Money-the bookstore will be open longer than usual just to accommodate you, so make sure you have some spending money to buy everything SHU you could possibly imagine!

Don’t forget though, you are only going to be here for one night so save the heavy packing for the end of the summer when you will move in for the Fall semester. Have fun packing and we can’t wait to see you bright and early for check-in!

Get Your Tweet On!

For the past few years, we have been hosting web chats for Incoming Freshman to talk with the Housing Staff and current students to learn more about housing at The Hall and what it’s like to live on campus.  However, being the social media junkies we are, we decided to try something new this summer. On Tuesday June 19th, the Department of Housing and Residence Life will be hosting its first ever Tweet Up!  This is a great opportunity for all you Incoming Freshman who have tons of questions for us like what you should pack, how many roommates you are going to have, or how meal plans work. We have heard it all, so no question is a bad question! We are so excited for you all to join us on this adventure and we hope you are as excited as we are.  We will be live on Twitter from 6:30-8:30pm. That is two whole hours for you to tweet, tweet, tweet! Think of questions now or just keep us in mind on the 19th and tweet us from your phone if you think of anything!

Just don’t forget to follow us on Twitter @SetonHallHRL and use #SHU2016 to follow the Tweet Up feed. Tweet us or your fellow classmates and enjoy the fun!

Letter to Families about Room Selection 2012-2013

To the Families of our Seton Hall University Resident Students:

Happy New Year from the Department of Housing and Residence Life at Seton Hall University! We will begin the 2012-2013 Room Selection process on February 1st, 2012. That is the first day on which students, who wish to return to housing, may submit their $325 non-refundable room reservation deposit and apply for housing. This is the first step in the process of applying for University housing. Students must meet all deadlines and complete all necessary steps in the process to be eligible to participate in room selection which begins the week of March 30th, 2012.

This is an exciting time for your student and we hope by sending information home to family members, you can become a partner in preparing them for this process. Spaces are limited and demand for housing has been greater in the last several years. Should demand for 2012-2013 exceed available spaces, students who deposit and apply on time will be placed on the Housing Wait List in lottery number order and placed before students who deposit late. Any student who deposits after the deadline (February 17th, 2012) will be placed on the Wait List and be assigned as spaces become available. Wait lists assignments are based on distance of home address from campus and date of application received.

Below is a brief informational checklist for Room Selection 2012-2013. We have also included a handy quick reference checklist for your refrigerator. We will send more information directly to students after the start of the spring semester and highlight Room Selection in our next episode of Hall Housing Happenings (if you wish to sign up to receive this parent video blog, please email us at SHUHOUSING@SHU.EDU.)

 RESOLVE BALANCE – Prior to February 1st: Make sure all balances are cleared and there are no holds on the student’s account. If there is a balance on the account, the student will not be permitted to apply for housing. Students can check their hold status on Banner Self-Service.
 SUBMIT $325 ROOM RESERVATION DEPOSIT – February 1st-17th: A room deposit of $325 is required and may be paid online 24 hours a day or in person in the Bursar’s office in Bayley Hall during business hours. Students who wish to be a part of the Room Selection process must submit their room reservation deposit no later than 11:59pm on February 17th, 2012. Please note: All credit card and electronic check payments must be made online through the “Pay Your Housing Deposit” link on the Housing & Residence Life website (http://www.shu.edu/offices/housing-residence-life/forms.cfm). Seton Hall University will accept Visa, MasterCard, or American Express for the housing deposit only. Also, beginning in 2012-2013, the housing deposit will no longer be refundable.
o Students who submit a room deposit on time will be able to complete a housing application, have their Priority Points calculated and be given a lottery number (Priority Points is the values-based system that Housing & Residence Life uses to determine lottery order for the room selection process.)
o Students who submit a room deposit late (after 11:59pm on February, 17th, 2012) will not have Priority Points calculated, will be ineligible to participate in the Room Selection process and will be depositing to our Housing Wait List.
 COMPLETE HOUSING APPLICATION – February 1st-17th: After submitting the Room Reservation Deposit, students complete the Housing Application online. Students who apply during this time frame will have their Priority Points calculated and be eligible to participate in the Room Selection process. As noted above, students who apply for housing after 11:59pm on February 17th, will not have Priority Points calculated, will be placed on the Housing Wait List and will be assigned when a room becomes available based on distance of home address from campus and date of application received. Please note: students who have a balance or registration hold on their account will not be permitted to complete a housing application until their account is cleared.
o Submission of the Housing Application means the student acknowledges and agrees to abide by the terms and conditions listed in the Housing License Agreement. This year’s License can be viewed on http://www.shu.edu/offices/housing-residence-life/forms.cfm.
 SELECT ROOM ASSIGNMENT – Beginning March 30th: Students will participate in an Online Room Selection process to select their rooms for the 2012-2013 academic year. We will send more information directly to eligible students on how the process moves forward, including specific dates for living learning communities like Sophomore Discovery Program and Turrell Manor Servant Leadership, after the start of the spring semester.
After students submit their Housing Applications, we are encouraging them to begin conversations with their peers about potential roommates and housing arrangements. We believe families are also an important part of this conversation. Different residence halls offer different living experiences and you can help your student to make good decisions that will enhance their experience at Seton Hall. Choice of roommates is also important to assure a good match in terms of living style and study habits. Your student may also wish to apply for one of our specialized living-learning communities which require a supplemental application in addition to the housing deposit and standard housing application. For more information on our residence halls and these communities, please visit www.shu.edu/go/housing.
It is our hope that this process will run smoothly for your student and that, with your help, your student will find a place to call Home at the Hall. If you or your student have any questions about the information contained in this letter, please call us at (973)761-9172 or email SHUHOUSING@SHU.EDU. You may also find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SetonHallHRL.
Sincerely,

Break Housing Information

The break housing process at Seton Hall University has changed slightly. Please read this important information if you will need housing for any of the breaks this year.

All Residence Halls except for Xavier Hall, Turrell Manor, and Ora Manor will close on November 24, 2010 at 10:00 AM and will reopen Sunday, November 28, 2010 at 2:00 PM for Thanksgiving Break. The Break Housing sign up process has changed this year, so make sure you read this email thoroughly.

You should plan not to be on campus since we have a limited number of beds available for those seeking a room over break, therefore Break Housing Applications will only be approved for those with extenuating circumstances. Break Housing is NOT GUARANTEED and to be eligible for accommodation, you MUST follow the process and deadline schedule below, as NO EXCEPTIONS will be made.

The Break Housing Process:

  • Where to apply: Log onto PirateNet, click on the Offices and Services tab, and then click on “Access your Housing Profile.”  The Break Housing Application can be found on the sidebar of your Housing Profile.
  • Who may apply: Students who need housing for the break and have exhausted all other alternatives.
  • Who needs approval: Break Housing Applicants must receive approval from the Xavier, Ora, or Turrell Residence Hall Director (RHD) prior to break via email. If you do not reside in one of the halls which will remain open, it is YOUR responsibility to find a friend of the same gender who will allow you to use their room.  If you are denied Break Housing, you must vacate when the residence halls close.

Break Housing Due Dates:

  • Wednesday, November 3, 2010: Break Housing Application becomes available via your Housing Profile on PirateNet.
  • Friday, November 12, 2010: Break Housing Application will close. No late submissions will be accepted!
  • Monday, November 15, 2010: Break Housing Applicants without a room to stay in over break will be notified of approval status by RHD via email.

  • Sunday, November 28, 2010 at 2:00PM: Halls re-open. Dinner will be the first meal served.

Break Housing is NOT GUARANTEED so, please consider these back-up options prior to applying:

  • Find a friend to stay with in the local area
  • Look up hotels to stay at in the area (if we are unable to accommodate you)
  • Find alternate modes of transportation
  • Carpool with others (you can post ride requests on your FaceBook page)
  • Meet family halfway

If you have any questions about Break Housing, please email SHUHousing@shu.edu, or contact your Residence Hall Director.
