We all know how deeply influenced by Greek drama and Greece itself (indeed, like many modernists) Susan Glaspell was, and how important to her later novels such as Fugitive’s Return was her sojourn there with Jig Cook before his death. It is our pleasure to announce that, in addition to the growing number of translations of Glaspell’s work into French, Spanish, and German, we can now add that several of Glaspell’s works have been translated into Greek by Prof. Chloe Veriti.

Educated in both Greece and London, Chloe Veriti currently lives in Nicosia, Cyprus where she is an educator, researcher, writer and translator. She began her professional career as a translator for the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, and has been an educator for many years, also serving as an advisor for the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus. She has been researching, promoting, and translating Glaspell’s work since 2016, resulting in her publications in Greek of Alison’s House in 2020, followed by her 2021 adaptation of Fugitive’s Return as a play entitled The Loom of Delphi, then Trifles and The Outside in 2023. All three are issued by Dodoni Publishers, Athens, Greece, founded in 1962 and renowned for its World Theatre series, which features more than 250 plays by playwrights around the world. Over the decades, Dodoni has become synonymous with theatre publishing in Greece, making it a particularly meaningful home for Glaspell translations. Dodoni has authorized Chloe to translate more of Glaspell’s works, particularly those with any relation to Greece.

Chloe also has an active role at ESTIA Theatre Centre, a small yet great theatre in Cyprus, the work of which reminds her of “the innovative work of Provincetown Theatre!” In conclusion, Chloe is passionate about continuing to represent Glaspell’s work in Greece and she writes:

“The act and art of translation is, after all, a profoundly significant act of faith, a delicate process of finding the space where another voice lives, listening deeply to what exists between words and silences, and carrying the truth of that vibration intact into a new language. When done with care, it becomes a form of preservation; when done in haste, it risks silencing the very breath it seeks to convey.”
