The break housing process at Seton Hall University has changed slightly. Please read this important information if you will need housing for any of the breaks this year.
All Residence Halls except for Xavier Hall, Turrell Manor, and Ora Manor will close on November 24, 2010 at 10:00 AM and will reopen Sunday, November 28, 2010 at 2:00 PM for Thanksgiving Break. The Break Housing sign up process has changed this year, so make sure you read this email thoroughly.
You should plan not to be on campus since we have a limited number of beds available for those seeking a room over break, therefore Break Housing Applications will only be approved for those with extenuating circumstances. Break Housing is NOT GUARANTEED and to be eligible for accommodation, you MUST follow the process and deadline schedule below, as NO EXCEPTIONS will be made.

Seton Hall University’s response to the incident during the weekend of 9/25/2010.
| From Student Affairs We are all shocked, outraged and saddened by the events of this past weekend. A criminal act took a young life, and left a deep scar on the University community. In the aftermath of these tragic events, my staff and I are working hard to meet the needs of all of our students. I wanted to give you an update on some of the latest developments. Specific initiatives undertaken by the University related to student safety include: Monday through Wednesday 7:40am until 2:00am http://www.shu.edu/offices/services/parking-services-shufly.cfm Let me also take this opportunity to repeat our advice about safety: I also want to remind all students of the availability of Counseling Services, located on the 2nd floor of Mooney Hall. Counseling Services, Residence Life staff, and all other Student Affairs staff may be reached 24/7 through Public Safety at 973.761.9300. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us for assistance. Also, if you wish to travel to Jessica Moore’s funeral services, please read below: From Student Affairs Funeral Services for Jessica Moore will be held Saturday, October 2nd in Virginia. Busses will leave campus between midnight and 1am, Saturday, arriving at Virginia State University for breakfast, and then onto the J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Petersburg, VA, for the Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Busses will depart for SHU immediately following the service. Seating is limited Students may secure a seat on the bus by coming to the Ticket Office on the first floor of the University Center, with their SHU ID, no later than Noon, Thursday, September 30th. The family requests that students wear SHU colors. |
This Wednesday, September 29th at noon, the university will be conducting a test of the emergency alert siren. The test of the siren will be followed by a test of the Pirate Alert electronic emergency notification system.
Please note this will only be a test.
If an actual emergency were to take place, it’s important to know what to do:
1. Get inside – anywhere. Run into the closest building.
2. Lock or barricade yourself in a room.
3. Quietly monitor the University’s web site or Pirate Alert for further information.

Give yourself a break!
All residence halls (except Xavier, Turrell, and Ora Manor) will close at 10am on Thursday, April 1st for Easter Break and will reopen on Monday, April 5th at 2pm. (Please note the change in dates from the magnet that was originally mailed home.)
If you require housing for any part of Winter break, you need to complete the Break Housing Questionairre located under Person Preferences on your Housing Profile on PirateNet by no later than Tuesday, March 30th.
Please note: if you live in a building that will be closed during the break, you must find someone of your same gender in one of the open buildings who will let you stay in their room during the break. Remember the earlier you register for break housing, the easier it will be for you to find someone’s room to stay in.
Filling out the Break Housing Questionnaire early and adhering to the following criteria will make your brak housing experience much easier for you. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN YOU BEING REFUSED ENTRY TO YOUR ROOM DURING THE BREAK.
– You must be the same gender as the resident you are attempting to stay with over the break.
– You may only have the number of people stay in a room over break as could live there during the year.
– Make sure to fill all fields in as requested. Leaving fields blank or filling out fields incorrectly may result in your application being denied.
– Make sure to get the key to the room you’ll be staying in ahead of time. The residence hall staff will not be issuing keys to anyone who forgets to do this.
– It is your responsibility to find someone who will let you use their room. If you are having difficulty, please speak with the RHD of the buildings that will remain open for further guidance. Register early if you need help finding a host.
– The break housing questionnaire must be completed by Tuesday, March 30th. If you think there is a chacne you might want to return early, make the appropriate arrangements and complete the questionnaire.
– There is no additional charge for break housing.

In order to settle into your new home in South Orange, New Jersey, please make sure you’ve reviewed and completed all necessary items on the the Enrollment Checklist.
Remember you have to fill out a housing application and pay BOTH a tuition ($250) AND housing ($250) deposit to be eligible for housing your freshmen year. Housing deposits are refundable until May 31st.
We will assign all new students in July and are able to promise housing to the first 850 applications and deposits we receive so apply and deposit early, please!

We’re excited to see the numbers of returning students eager to apply to come back to housing next year! Many of you have asked us where to send your parents to make the housing deposit.
The housing deposit can be paid right off the front page of our housing application. For easier access, here’s the link .
Since the letter was sent home to families back in November, the Bursar’s office has notified us they will accept Visa cards for housing deposits only. We apologize for the confusion this may have caused.
Remember, deposits and applications have to be submitted by February 19th to be able to participate in Room Selection!
All students must apply or reapply yearly for financial aid.
To be given the greatest consideration, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to March 1, the Seton Hall priority deadline.
The online FAFSA is available January 1 each year. Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Our school code is 002632.
If the priority date is missed, students should apply as soon as possible to be considered for any financial aid that is still available, such as Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and PLUS loans. Students who apply for aid after the March 1 priority date, should apply no later than June 1 to renew eligibility for State of New Jersey grant programs.
Students should not wait to be admitted to Seton Hall before applying for financial aid.
Tips for Filing Your FAFSA:
1. Gather the documents you need.
Start with your Social Security Number, driver’s license, student and parent income tax returns, bank statements and investment records.
2. Electronically sign your FAFSA application.
Students and parents need to apply for a PIN to electronically sign the student FAFSA. To apply for a PIN, visit www.PIN.ed.gov
3. Apply as soon after January 1 as possible.
