Benin Passes Law Legalizing Abortion

On October 20th the West African Nation of Benin passed a law that would legalize abortion. Previously abortion was legal in Benin only in cases of rape, incest, or serious health concerns, the new law passed through parliament after heated debate will allow for termination up to three months in cases where the pregnancy was, “likely to aggravate or cause a situation of material, educational, professional or moral distress incompatible with the interests of the woman and/or the unborn child.”

Mexican Abortion Ruling Lays Groundwork for Legalization

On September 7th the Mexican Supreme Court ruled that criminalizing abortion was unconstitutional, and established a legal precedent that could lay the groundwork for legalizing abortion across the country. The specific case heard by the court concerned a challenge to the criminalization of abortion in the State of Coahuila, immediately reversing the law in that state and providing the possibility to do the same across the country.
