In Spring, 2024, Seton Hall University’s School of Diplomacy and International Relations undergraduate Madeline Rowe had the unique opportunity of interning for former Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. at his District Office in Paterson. This internship, which ran from January to late May, provided Madeline with invaluable experience in the world of local politics and constituent services. She expresses that her interest in the public sector has only grown since interning with the former Congressman.

Congressman Pascrell, a Democrat representing New Jersey’s 9th congressional district, had been serving in the United States House of Representatives since 1997. Prior to serving in the House of Representatives, Pascrell was the mayor of Paterson from 1990 to 1997. His long tenure in office was marked by a commitment to his local community and a passion for public service that left a lasting impression on those who worked with him, including interns like Madeline.

Working in the office twice a week, Madeline’s responsibilities were diverse and engaging. She directed phone calls, attended events, and assisted caseworkers with various tasks. The office environment was particularly welcoming, and the staff included other Seton Hall Diplomacy School alumni, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared experience.

One of the most notable events Madeline attended was a forum for religious leaders in the district. At this event, Congressman Pascrell shared information about a security grant for houses of worship. This experience opened Madeline’s eyes to the security needs of religious institutions, making her realize that the level of security she was accustomed to at Seton Hall was not universal. “It was eye-opening to see how much more work is necessary to protect our places of worship,” she shared.

Other significant events included police swearing-in ceremonies, campaign events, and the Congressman’s annual art competition. Hosted by a community center in Clifton, Madeline had an unexpected opportunity to speak. Without prior notice, Congressman Pascrell invited her to the podium to share her experience interning within the district. Rising to the occasion, Madeline addressed the crowd, which included not only attendees but also a camera crew and the Congressman himself. Madeline expresses that the opportunity, though impromptu and nerve-racking, helped her grow in confidence as she successfully spoke to the event’s large crowd.

Through her internship, Madeline honed several crucial skills. She learned the importance of flexibility, as plans were often changed with unfolding district, state, and national news. She improved her writing skills, having to meet deadlines upon short notice. She also learned that working alongside passionate and welcoming office staff can make each day much more exciting. Madeline shares her gratitude for the opportunity, knowing that these experiences will undoubtedly serve her well in her future career in diplomacy and international relations.

Tragically, in late August 2024, Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. passed away. Madeline felt honored to attend his funeral, recognizing the privilege of being among one of his last group of interns. She expressed great respect for the work the Congressman had accomplished throughout his career and pride for the opportunity to contribute to his office’s efforts.

Reflecting on her internship, Madeline emphasized the unique learning experiences it provided. From understanding the intricacies of local politics to witnessing firsthand the impact of a dedicated public servant, her time in Congressman Pascrell’s office was formative. As a Diplomacy student, Madeline conveys that she is grateful to the school for successfully preparing her for this internship. As she continues her studies at Seton Hall’s School of Diplomacy and International Relations, she carries with her the lessons learned and memories made during this significant internship experience.
