Derek Chauvin’s Trial is Beginning: What has America Learned, and How Do We Continue Forward?

On March 25, 2020, the world watched as George Floyd laid face down on a street outside a Minneapolis shop, pleading for his life. Floyd was accused of attempting to pay for cigarettes with a “fake” $20 bill. Floyd was handcuffed and restrained by police officers, while then-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin placed his knee on Floyd’s head and neck for 7 minutes and 46 seconds. Those moments, captured on spectators’ mobile cameras and shared on social media and the news, were Floyd’s final moments alive.

Protests Erupt in France Over New Security Bill

On Saturday, November 28, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Paris, Lille, Strasbourg, and Rennes to marched peacefully in response to growing concerns regarding Article 24 of a controversial proposed security law. The bill aims to restrict people from filming and publishing discernible images of on-duty French police officers with the intent of damaging their “physical or psychological integrity,” The Guardian reports.

#EndSARS Protests Continue in Nigeria

Nigeria has found it impossible to create a sense of national cohesion due to systemic abuses of power which have afflicted its citizens. Protests have erupted across the entire country recently, calling for the disbandment of the infamous Special Anti-Robbery Squad, or SARS, which many have accused of brutality against the people. The call to #EndSars is underway, and protesters are insistent on holding SARS and the Nigerian government accountable.
