Aruna Sanyal’s Word Tracing and Speech Patterns Assignments

Aruna Sanyal’s Two Assignments:
Key Word or Phrase; Indirect Free Speech or Double-Speak
(From the Aruna/Russell Close Reading Group)

British Literature II Assignment:

In this explication please look for a word/phrase/set of phrases that seem to be a recurring aspect of the novel “Pride and Prejudice”. Examine how this word is used in her times and ours by studying the word in OED.  Explore any thematic ties or character analysis you may be led to following this word and its trajectory in the novel.  Alternately,  analyze a significant passage or section of a chapter where you see the author using free indirect speech, or a double-speak underlying a satiric intention. What larger implications about the novel and its themes can you draw from this? Explain.

The length of the work should be no less than 3 pages and no more than 5 pages. You must use both parenthetical citations and a Works Cited page according to MLA guidelines to give textual support for your explication and/or analysis. Other than the OED, you are NOT expected to do any outside research.  You may bring in your reading of the Ian Watts chapters if you so wish.

This is part of your mid-term exam, so please do not use tutoring service to revise the essay, even though you are free to write multiple drafts for your own convenience and self-edit.

The due date is Thursday, February 9.  Please submit a printed version of the explication in class.
