Following the announcement of the retirement of Angela Merkel, Germany held a federal election on September 26, 2021, the first without its Chancellor in almost 16 years. According to the Guardian Germany uses a system in which voters cast two votes, one directly for a representative and another for a party.

German Politician Resigns Over Mask Corruption

In Germany, corruption allegations are threatening the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) as well as its sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) ahead of elections in multiple German states. The CDU is the party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has been in power for 15 years. However, this scandal is coming just months before she planned to step down in September.  BBC News notes that with Merkel leaving office, strong CDU leadership is needed if the party is to pick up the torch from the chancellor.

Merkel Will Not Seek Re-Election Following Huge Election Losses

 
Germany’s mammoth political leader, Angela Merkel, announced on October 29 that she will not seek re-election as German Chancellor in 2021. Merkel also stated that she would step down as the head of her political party, the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), at its conference in December.
