High level of COVID-19 cases in India is Pushing Children out of School and into Child Labor

As schools have shut down, India is facing an increase in child sex trafficking, child labor, and forced child marriages. To cope with the pressures of the pandemic, families have no option but to send their children to work. Children across India are working in a broad spectrum of fields such as “carpet-weaving, garment-making, domestic service, agriculture, fisheries, and mining,” Reuters says. This issue was already prominent in India and is only worsened by the pandemic.

Yemen and Houthi Talks Showcase First Step Towards Peace

After 10 days of intense negotiation, the Yemeni government coalition and Houthi rebels have agreed to release over 1,000 prisoners. The war between the two parties began in 2014, when a Houthi-led rebel group, backed by Iran, took control of the northern and western regions of Yemen, including the capital of Sanaa. In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition intervened, displaying support for the internationally recognized Yemeni government headed by President Hadi. In recent months, the rebels have also intensified drone-strikes and missile attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Armenia and Azerbaijan clash violently over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, leaving many dead

On September 27, the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh reached its highest level of violence since 2016. Reuters reports that the clashes have reignited concerns over stability in the South Caucasus, a popular corridor for oil and gas pipelines that supply the world market. The pipeline runs from the Shah Deniz gas field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea to Turkey.

Inter-Afghan Peace Talks Kick Off with Distrust, Uncertainty, and Violence 

On September 12, peace talks between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban officially began in Doha, Qatar. For two decades, the Taliban and the Afghan government have been at war, with civilian casualties over 31,000 according to a study by Brown University. The peace talks follow an agreement between the Taliban and the U.S., which brought an end to the 18 year long conflict, reports DW.

The Man Who Inspired the Movie “Hotel Rwanda” Arrested for Terrorism 

Paul Rusesabagina, the man whose story inspired the Academy Award-nominated 2004  film “Hotel Rwanda,” has been arrested on charges of terrorism in his native country of Rwanda, according to CNN. The Rwandan government alleges that he is the “founder, leader, and sponsor of violent, armed, extremist terror outfits,” accused of perpetrating a series of rural attacks in the summer of 2018. News of his arrest only broke after Rwandan police and security officials publicly displayed him in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, at the end of August.

Need for Assistance as Floods Devastate Sudan

Sudan faced record breaking floods in early September that killed around 100 people and affected 800,000, according to a United Nations estimate. Seasonal rainfall caused the Nile River to rise by 57 feet and overflow. The floods have affected all 18 Sudanese states with the capital, Khartoum, being hit the worst according to The Washington Post. The Sudanese government called for a three-month state of emergency as the issue began in July, with more rain expected to come within the coming weeks.

U.S. Continues to Strengthen Ties with Taiwan

Keith Krach’s recent visit to Taiwan has strained the already weakening Sino-American relationship and it has created tensions between China and Taiwan. The BBC explains that the U.S. and China have been engaged in a trade war since 2018. T The New York Times furthers this, explaining that the states have been challenging each other on a wide variety of issues, including military dominance in Asia. After the arrival of the senior U.S. envoy, Taiwan’s defense ministry reported that China sent out two anti-submarine aircrafts into the defense identification zone of the island.
