On February 26, United States President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated video of the Gaza Strip depicting victims of war digging through rubble until the landscape changes to a dystopian scenery that displays “Trump’s Gaza,” a grotesque image of beachside condos and skyscrapers, reflecting his neocolonialist vision for the region. Trump’s plans for the “Riveria of the Middle East” echoes a heartbreaking era of Palestinian history and fundamentally threatens the international order.

International Law and the War in Gaza 

On October 22, the Middle Eastern & North African Studies Program and the Department of History hosted a talk by Professor Jonathan Hafetz of the Seton Hall University School of Law that explored the legal issues surrounding Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza. Professor Hafetz examined the principles of jus ad bellum and jus in bello, which concern the right to self-defense and violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), and discussed which tribunals have jurisdiction over international crimes committed during the war.

Al-Shifa Under Attack: Israeli Aggression targets Gaza Hospital System

As Israeli forces advance their attacks on the hospital and surrounding areas, the international community has raised concerns for the sick, injured, and displaced. According to Al Jazeera, Israel’s total siege of the area has depraved over 650 patients, 500 medical staff, and approximately 5,000 to 7,000 displaced individuals sheltering in Al-Shifa of electricity and fuel.
