Former Philippine President Duterte Arrested, Faces ICC Charges for Drug War Killing

Rodrigo Duterte, the former President of the Philippines, was arrested last month after the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest. After his arrest, Duterte was extradited to The Hague, in the Netherlands, where he is currently in Dutch custody. Duterte traveled back to the Philippines after speaking to Filipinos living in Hong Kong, reports the  Associated Press.

Protests Erupt in Türkiye after Arrest of Opposition Party Candidate

The recent arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul, has sparked protests across  Türkiye. İmamoğlu was detained on Wednesday, March 19, and arrested the following Sunday. According to BBC News, İmamoğlu has been charged with various crimes related to corruption and criminal organizations, and the government attempted to charge him with aiding a terrorist organization.

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso Officially Exit ECOWAS Amid Regional Tensions

As of January 29, the military governments of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger announced that they have officially left the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). According to The New York Times, tensions between the three countries and ECOWAS began in 2023 after Nigerien officers overthrew the civilian government in a military coup. This followed a 2021 coup in Mali and a 2022 coup in Burkina Faso.
