BTS Lights Up Seoul in a Powerful Cultural Return

After a four-year hiatus, the global K-pop group BTS returned to the stage with a massive comeback concert on March 21 drawing tens of thousands of fans to Gwanghwamun Square. The electric performance marked the group’s first concert with all seven members since 2022, following the completion of each member’s mandatory military service in South Korea. More than just a musical reunion, the event highlighted BTS’s continued global impact and positioned South Korean culture as a significant and unifying force on the international stage.

The concert turned central Seoul into a highly controlled performance space, with a heavy police presence managing crowds and restricting access to surrounding areas. The Associated Press reported that about 22,000 fans secured seats within the designated viewing zone, while many others eagerly gathered nearby to watch on rows of large screens stretching across several blocks. The event was also streamed on Netflix, allowing viewers from around the world to witness the long-awaited and emotional return. Fans, known as ARMY, filled the area with light sticks, cheers, singing, and phone screens as BTS performed songs from their new album ARIRANG, including “Body to Body” and “2.0,” the group’s first full-length album since Be in 2020. 

In messages shared after the concert, the group reflected on the significance of returning to the stage together. Billboard quoted BTS saying, “After four long years of waiting, the seven members gathered again,” while expressing gratitude to fans and local officials who supported the performance. The release quickly achieved commercial success, selling nearly four million copies on its first day and demonstrating that the group’s global popularity not only endured, but intensified during their hiatus. 

BTS’s return carried major economic implications. The group’s upcoming world tour, which includes dozens of performances across multiple continents, will likely generate crucial revenue and attract international attention. BBC News reported that BTS concerts often boost tourism and local businesses, with hotels in Seoul fully booked ahead of the event. On top of that, the comeback illustrates the broader expansion of the K-pop industry, which keeps growing in both reach and profitability. 

BTS extended its influence beyond economics into the realm of cultural diplomacy. The title, ARIRANG, references a traditional Korean folk song that embodies resilience and cultural heritage. The New York Times argued that BTS played an important role in transforming K-pop into a global phenomenon, noting that the group helped “cement South Korea’s status as a cultural powerhouse.” By integrating Korean history and identity into their music, BTS helps broaden international understanding of Korean culture. In doing so, the group demonstrates how entertainment can function as soft power, shaping how nations present themselves on the world stage. 

However, beyond the celebration, the concert sparked criticism among some local residents and observers. Extensive security measures, road closures, and transit disruptions affected businesses and daily life in the Gwanghwamun area. Prestige shared that the event drew more than 100,000 fans to central Seoul, a turnout that reflected both BTS’s enormous reach and the logistical strain such a performance created. While officials introduced these precautions to ensure safety, some critics questioned whether authorities exercised too much control over public space for a concert. Despite this concern, others viewed the disruptions as a necessary tradeoff for the economic and cultural benefits BTS brought to the city. 

For ARMY, the performance transmitted a strong sense of connection and emotional resonance. The atmosphere conveyed not only excitement, but also a collective relief and renewed connection between the group and its fanbase. As BTS begins this  new phase in their career, their return signals more than just the end of military service. It reaffirms that passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to one’s craft can sustain artistry and lasting impact, while highlighting how music can have the power to transcend borders, stir emotion, and bring people together.
