Mental Health & Material Insecurity

This image defines material insecurity
Material insecurity is the limited ability to meet basic needs such as food, water, or shelter.

In the past year, everyone has been faced with some level of instability and insecurity due to the effects of the global pandemic, COVID-19. This unprecedented and ongoing event has made an impact on every level of society, revealing the stark realities of how quickly our material security can disappear almost overnight.

Some of the issues that have been commonly felt through many areas of society are:

  • Finance and job insecurity, which can lead to loss of food, shelter or other basic needs.
  • Health issues: physically and emotionally. Long term stress can even lead to medical issues such as heart disease and high blood pressure (NIH)
  • Uncertainty about the future causes anxiety and further disrupts the ability to cope with change. (NCBI)

This gallery of our exhibition seeks to highlight that these are not new issues in society and provide practical resources to help combat material insecurity and break the stigma.
