Mental Health Care in the LGBTQIA+ Community

For more information please visit The Trevor Project.

Mental health care within the LGBTQIA+ community tends to be lacking. The LGBTQIA+ community is a diverse community of people with a wide range of sexual and gender identities. Mental health care practices for this community tend to group these diverse individuals, dismissing the fact that each orientation and identity has unique needs regarding mental health.

In addition to mental healthcare being inadequate within this community, many LGBTQ youth struggle with accessing proper care. Many barriers exist preventing youths within this community from receiving the help they need, including affordability, getting parental permission, identifying a provider they can trust with experience in LGBTQ mental health issues, anxiety over being outed, and issues of transportation. According to the Trevor Project’s 2020 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, 46% of LGBTQ youth report they wanted psychological or emotional counseling from a mental health professional but were unable to receive it in the past 12 months” (The Trevor Project)
