On March 24th, Stephen A. Smith spent the day at Seton Hall University providing students with an inside look into his daily life. The visit, hosted at the University Center’s Gallagher Studio, gave students a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the world of sports media while interacting directly with one of the industry’s most recognizable voices. A full-day event filled with live broadcasting, student engagement, and career mentorship.

The event began with Smith’s two live broadcasts, ESPN’s First Take from 10 a.m. to noon and The Stephen A. Smith Show on SiriusXM from 1 to 3 p.m. These two experiences gave students the opportunity to see a national sports show produced in real time and for many it was the first time. From the beginning of Smith’s appearance, the energy was evident and he admitted at the beginning of the First Take broadcast that he was there “because the kids have summoned me.”

Besides the broadcasts, the visit was a great example of growth mindset. The students of Seton Hall’s Center for Sports Media were prepared for Stephen A. Smith’s visit and even created a 3D-printed image of Smith as a gift for his time dedicated to the students. . Smith embraced the moment with humor and appreciation, showing a more personal side of the typically intense commentator.

The most impactful part of the event was when the cameras were turned off and the students had the opportunity to ask Smith questions. Throughout the Q&A session Stephen A. spoke about his challenges growing up and the personal experiences that have led to his success. One of his biggest pieces of advice to the crowd was the importance of perseverance and self-belief as key drivers of his success. For students aspiring to break into sports media, this advice provided both inspiration and practical insight.

Stephen A. Smith proved his commitment towards the success of the next generation and the importance of giving back. Despite a demanding schedule, he took the time to answer all questions and offered valuable guidance to those present.

Overall, Stephen A. Smith’s visit to Seton Hall was more than just a celebrity appearance, it was an immersive educational experience. By combining live media production with personal interaction, the event gave students a meaningful glimpse into the realities of sports broadcasting while leaving a lasting impression on those in attendance.
