Tim Tebow Will Return to the Gridiron

Could we be seeing Tim Tebow back on the field this season?

The Florida Gators legend is back, but not at the position we would expect.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed Tebow to a one-year contract to play tight end for them. The Jaguars have been in contact with the former Heisman winner after his six-year hiatus from the sport.

Tebow has stayed involved with football by taking a position with ESPN as a broadcast analyst for college football. This position gave him the ability to pursue a career in baseball in 2016. Tebow signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets in 2016 and stayed with the franchise for his entire minor league career. He announced his retirement from professional baseball in February of 2021, finishing with a career batting average of .222 and hitting 18 home runs.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are rebuilding their team after another losing season. The Jags secured the overall first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft turning their sights to Clemson superstar Trevor Lawrence. After drafting Lawrence, it is imperative to surround him with a great supporting cast. The thought of Tebow joining the roster as a tight end proves to be a last-ditch effort to pull this squad together and get some wins on the season. Looking deeper into the offer, Tebow played for newly hired head coach Urban Meyer, at the University of Florida, where they managed to secure two national championships together.

Meyer claims to not have been present as Tebow worked out with the team but knows that they need an arsenal of talented players to be competitive within the league. The Jags already have Chris Manhertz, rookie Luke Farrell, and Tyler Davis on their roster at the tight end position. Meyer looks at Tebow as more than just a player on the field but a possible mentor for Lawrence.

There has been some controversy surrounding this move. Many question why former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and social justice advocate Colin Kaepernick has not been able to have the opportunity to play in the league but Tebow is able to get a contract for a position he has never played before.
