NCAA Sweet 16 Men’s Soccer Matchup: Who are the Virginia Tech Hokies?

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s soccer team represents the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in all NCAA Division I men’s college soccer competitions. The Hokies are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference and play their home matches at Sandra D. Thompson Field. This season will mark their ninth appearance in the 2021 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament and fifth in past five seasons.

Virginia Tech men’s soccer program has gone 7-6-3 overall for the 2021 season. During conference play the Hokies ended up going 5-5-2 remaining in the middle of the conference. The team did not win the ACC Tournament Championship but did receive a berth into the NCAA Tournament after a hard-fought game against the University of Massachusetts resulting in a 3-3 tie after a double overtime.

On May 2, the Hokies took on the Oregon State Beavers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hokies were able to come out on top after edging out the Beavers in overtime with a goal from senior, forward Jacob Labovitz to break the 1-1 tie. With their 2-1 win, it sends them into the third round to face the Seton Hall Pirates. Virginia Tech’s goalkeeper, Matt Zambetti, recorded six saves coming off eight shots on goal. On the offensive end, the Hokies were able to get off eight shots, five being on goal, connecting on two of those attempts.

Virginia Tech’s Daniel Pereira, sophomore, received Midfielder of the Year honors in the 2020 Men’s Soccer All-ACC Team while also finding a place on the ACC Conference First Team honors list, he is accompanied by senior, midfielder, Kristo Strickler. Rounding out the honors, Jacob Labovitz is recognized on Third Team all-conference.

The matchup between the Hokies and Pirates looks to be a good one with two solid midfield lines that look to keep this game locked until the final minutes.
