Seton Hall Begins Renovation on Historic Walsh Gymnasium

At the beginning of last week, Seton Hall began the renovations for the Walsh Gym renovation project.

The project started with demolition after the project had been pushed due to the COVID-`9 pandemic and is now expected to be finished in September 2021.

Walsh Gymnasium was the first permanent basketball facility built on the South Orange campus in 1941, when the men’s basketball team played the first basketball game on campus. Seton Hall University president Monsignor James Kelley based the Walsh Gymnasium off of facilities found at St. Catherine’s College and Yale University for the multipurpose functions of both facilities.

The renovations for the athletic facility include:

  • Replacing all the old seats with new ones as well as replacing the bleachers on the court level with chair backs.
  • Installation of a center-hung scoreboard and video board panels to the left and right of the stage as well as a new sound system.
  • Replacing existing portable baskets with new affixed baskets that come down from the ceiling.
  • New hardwood court, new paint and Seton Hall branding
