Preview of softball doubleheader against Lehigh

The Pirates will close out their non conference regular season schedule Wednesday afternoon when they take on the Lehigh University mountain hawks for a doubleheader set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field in South Orange.

The Pirates are coming off of 5-4 win over Providence College, which was decided in extra innings on Saturday afternoon. The win saw heroics from Baylee Allender who went 3-for-4 with a double, homerun, two runs scored and two RBIs. Allender was able to tie the game in the seventh inning, forcing extra innings. Hailey Arteaga secured the Pirates win in the top of the eighth with an RBI single, scoring Brianna Wallace.

The Saturday win improved the Pirates’ record to 19-21 overall and 6-7 in conference play. The win also moved the Pirates into fourth place in the Big East standings. The Pirates now have a two game win streak.

Lehigh’s record is currently 18-24 and they are coming off of a Saturday loss to Stony Brook University.

Arteaga is a player to watch as she leads the team with a .381 batting average and leads the team in RBIs with 29.  Janae Barracato has the second highest batting average on the team with a .333 average and follows close behind Arteaga with 25 RBIs. Arteaga, along with Darby Pandolfo, have four homeruns each, while Allender leads the team with seven.
