The Bowling Green

The Bowling Green is the oldest park in NYC, founded in 1773, and sits at the bottom of Broadway. During the Revolution, there was a large fence and a statue of King George the III, which originated in the 1760s.  After hearing the Declaration of Independence in 1776, an angry mob went to the park, tore down the statue and parts of the fence, melted it all down, and made bullets for the army.
