On March 9, Pope Francis greeted the Joint Working Group for Dialogue between the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue and the Palestine Commission for Interreligious Dialogue. The theme of the meeting was the spiritual significance of Jerusalem.

Pope Francis notes that Jerusalem is “the Holy City for Jews, Christians and Muslims alike.” May this exchange become part of a wider search for the peace that is related to the traditional etymology of Jerusalem as the “City of Peace.” As the dual form of the Hebrew word Yerusalaim indicates, the Biblical model is the heavenly Jerusalem. The human challenge is for good will among peoples of faith to bring this ideal into our world!

The Joint Working Group for Dialogue is based on the following Memorandum of Understanding signed by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and Shaykh Mahmoud Al-Habbash on December 6, 2017.

May this and all common efforts to share hope for peace contribute to a deeper understanding among adherents to the three faiths originating in the Middle East!
