Changing Weather Patterns, Climate Change, and Civil War Dynamics: Institutions and Conflicts in the Sahel

“If there is to be any long-term stability in the Sahel – and with the expectation that weather trends will continue decreasing livability in that environment – the international community and governments in the region need to develop strategies and ways of circumventing insurgents, terrorists, and local ‘big men’ that exploit such precarious climate shocks.”

Using empirical evidence, this article analyzes the effects of climate change on the rise of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram. Their study focuses largely on the Sahel region and the Lake Chad Basin.
