“Awakening Your Organization’s Purpose” – Dean Elizabeth Halpin

  • Try packets and exercises with your student organizations
  • What is the purpose of the organization? What is the mission? Is it meaningful? Do you achieve that meaning in everything you do and when planning events? Do you consciously think about the meaning of the organization when planning?
  • Since the Diplomacy School is a professional school preparing us for the work world, these packets could help improve the professionalism of school organizations
  • Use the exercise to see how to do a better job at being strategic, professional, and purpose-driven when planning and participating in student organizations
  • Organizations have social benefits and fulfillment through community service, but what do you as a career person gain from your organization and its actions
  • Communication is 55% body language, 38% tone, 7% words
  • Need to create a standard by showing the same care in your personal demeanor and your professional demeanor
  • How did you change the world today? Value your daily contribution no matter how small, do not downplay your contribution, our contributions can have big impacts
  • Even ideas can change the world through perceptions and interactions because we gain greater understanding to carry into our professional careers
  • Millennials are the most purpose-driven generation with philanthropy and job satisfaction, but the least engaged workforce – how do we find the balance between the two, how do we harness our passion and ideas to reduce disengagement in the workforce
