The Leadership Development Advisory Council met for the first time this school year on September 24, 2013. After enjoying some refreshments and greeting one another, Mike began his introduction. He started off by recognizing the accomplishments of the Leadership Program in the past years and all that we are doing currently: Leadership has been ranked 24th nationally, initiated the commencement of both the Leadership Women’s Program and Group Mentoring, and inspired the School of Diplomacy to create its own leadership program.

The discussion was opened to all members, and it was not long until everyone collaborated together to define what the team is competing against. The Leadership students exemplify valuable qualities, undertake worthy internships and go beyond expectations, but how can we provide a better outreach and get our name both out in the community and globally?

Council member Andrea Schrager suggested that students write articles about their internships or interactions that occurred that offer insight to be published on websites. Others mentioned sending out press releases about what is being featured in the Program such as playing video testimonials at recruiting events, getting Leadership’s name on mailing lists to be sent out to prospective students, being featured in NJ Monthly Magazine and, importantly, maintaining strong relationships with alumni. Numerous topics circulated around students being well-rounded and not just having internships as their only prevailing component. Instead, there should be various uses of strategic communications and a balance between academics and volunteer effects within the community. Additionally, council member Kimberly Mills, Leadership class of 2005, proposed considering to incorporate co-op programs into the curriculum to help the team partner with companies that have their own leadership program. This could expand our council and open more doors for students.

Mike concluded by announcing that council member Kevin Cummings will be honored at the Raise Hope Foundation Annual Event for his leadership in the Investors Bank support for the disabled and military veterans on October 17th.

Shortly after, the students joined the executives for some networking and dinner to wrap up a successful and insightful night.
