On Monday night, September 23rd, group mentoring leader, Danielle Andreani, hosted her first session of the year! She received an excellent turn out for the meeting with such successful feedback from those attendees after the meeting. Executives raved about the professionalism and responsiveness of the team they worked with. The business formal attire and the hand-out of introductory packets truly set the tone for the rest of the discussion.

The executives and mentees focused on the journey through college: what to expect, how to choose internships, and which attitudes to assume while making these crucial life decisions before and after graduation.

Great job, Danielle, for conducting an outstanding session that was thought-provoking and beneficial for all who attended!

Below are the meeting minutes for Danielle’s group mentoring session:

Group Mentoring Session #1

September 23, 2013

Goals For The Upcoming Year

– Form solid relationships with the members of our Leadership Council.

– To always remember this is a two way street; both parties are here to give and learn.

– To discuss tactical advice/information about the transition from where we are now, to where we want to go.

– Find and follow our driving passion, wherever it may take us.

– How to cope and manage the transition from college to the workplace.

– Work on our networking and presentational skills.

– Learn and recognize the difference between communication among friends and communication in the workplace.

– Share life experiences, both good and bad, so we may learn and grow from them.

Notes From The Meeting

Most Valuable Experience in College:

–  Andrea: Ran for office in college in an attempt to reinvent herself. It forced her to step out of her comfort zone. Also, don’t show other people you are nervous, always portray confidence.

–  Dave: Take responsibility for your actions rather than letting others take the blame. Rather than letting his friends take the fall for having a party on campus, he turned himself into the Dean.

–  Bill: Rather than just doing what is expected of you, in his case being a pre-med major, follow the sparks. Take classes outside of your concentration because you never know what you will find.

–  Manny: Also started out pre-med track, but he found out it wasn’t for him. He took classes in all different disciplines to find what he enjoyed.

What is to Come After College:

–  Andrea: Took one accounting class in college and got a job because of that one course. Don’t be afraid to take a job because you may not meet all the qualifications. There is a learning curve to any job, don’t let that deter you.

–  Manny: Don’t choose a company based solely on salary, the company has to be a good fit for yourself. Choose the best experiences and learning opportunities. Company’s values are important, learn the business!

–  Bill: Take advantage of what’s on campus and what the school has to offer. It is important to watch your reputation. Nobody is ever neutral, they always have an opinion of you.

–  Dave: He never actually looked for a job. Rather than focusing on job solely, utilize networking opportunities available.

–  In terms of reputation, social media is becoming more and more crucial. Things you post are never gone. As said by Bill, “We all fall down”. Take accountability for your actions.

Internships:

–  Life is experience is just as important as internships.

–  Don’t focus solely on number of internships, rather what you can gain/provide in each opportunity.

–  Make sure you find internships that you are interested in.

–  Use your opportunities to make yourself memorable, without something to set yourself apart you will blend into the crowd.

–  Enjoy life while you are still young.”
