Thank you for sharing, Megan. It was extremely interesting and shocking learning about how a large percentage of sex offenders often have a relationship/are known by the victim. I agree how social workers should work towards more preventative measures in these cases.
Thank you, Megan! I have always heard of stranger danger, and I never realized the impact that that statement had. I have heard of Meghan’s law before, but I never looked into it this deeply to realize that it has a negative impact. It amazes me how many of the offenders know their victims and how this information is not out there.
Thank you for speaking about this, Megan. I had no idea that this even existed and I’m glad you brought it to my attention. I also really like that you brought up the common misconception that strangers are the biggest danger to children, as this is not the truth.
This happened not too far from where my aunt lives and my older cousin was about the same age as Megan when it happened. I do agree that there needs to be reform when it comes to sex offenders because there are so many today that just get off clean, for a lack of better terms, and through reforming this we can keep communities and especially children safe.
Great job Megan! I found it very interesting when you discussed how people preach stranger danger but that is in fact not true. Of course, strangers can be dangerous but you also have to look out for the people around you and that are in your life. I am glad that Megan’s Law has attempted to turn around this thinking of stranger danger.
The recommendations you suggested, I believe are very effective. By law, registered offenders released from prison should have to engage in a program to prevent the act reoccurring. It bothers me that the numbers and data prove that people who sexually abuse children tend to reoffend and there are no laws to force intervention. Because of this, there should definitely be more proactive laws to ensure offenders do not continue the behavior.
Great presentation Megan, I learned a lot about Megan’s law and how ineffective it is in the state of New Jersey. Furthermore, recidivism rates are extremely high, threatening our society’s well-being. By passing effective laws, we can decrease recidivism rates and ensure the protection of children. Also, seeing the statistics before and after Megan’s Law was really helpful in understanding how ineffective it was in New Jersey. Overall, this was a good job, and thank you for sharing.
Megan, thank you for giving light to a very important topic, I think sexual assault and predators sometimes is a touchy subject but it is important that we continue to make conversation to spread awareness. I think policy is often times outdated and we need to sometimes revisit law to make it proactive and more effective. Thank you for shedding light on this topic.
Megan, I agree that there should be more of a look into preventative and intervention measures for this issue. A comment that also got my mind moving was that the Megan’s Law changes the behavior of victims rather than the behavior of the offenders. This made me look deeper into what the law actually works to do and it doesn’t seem like a proactive policy, like how you pointed out, and doesn’t work to address the true issue at hand.
Thank you for spreading awareness about this topic. Many people believe that strangers are typically the threat, yet it is terrible that it is close family members who are the victims.

I like that she brought up that social workers should draw more attention to rehabilitating offenders in order to prevent future offending
