I am glad you brought attention to the issue of older adults feeling isolated because it is an issue that most people are unaware of or forget about. H.R.5005, as well as the recommendations you made, encourages social workers and others to care more about the wellbeing of older individuals. Good job!
This presentation is interesting as often times when it comes to those individuals of a significantly older age, we mostly associate the issues that accompany them as health related issues. Often time these older individuals or the elderly are often ignored when it comes to the fact that they may not have as much social interaction as others due to a variety of factors. When you mentioned the social issues that inflict these individuals I immediately thought of what solutions can present itself to eradicate this problem. Why are there only focus on these health related issues but not much focus on social related issues. As we can see especially in these modern times feelings of loneliness, unemployment, and the lack of social interaction can lead to many issues, such as depression, other psychological related issues, and also physiological impact. If the government can push policy and push people to advocate, or allow out for certain things and other areas of peoples lives, especially for the younger generation, or communities, which were once not accepted and society. Why are we so behind when it comes to our elderly and their issues, not related to immune health. improvement of the cognitive ability is very important when it comes to loneliness as many elderly, especially if they lack interaction with other individuals, or the opportunity to interact and policy to push, for this should be promoted as you mentioned in the HR 5.005. Even though dealing with these older individuals, such as the elderly can be seemingly difficult for the average person with everything that accompanies a social worker and the things that they know, hopefully more push, more grants, more money can help improve the situation these people are suffering from. Yes, the social workers must advocate and do their job accordingly, but we are normal citizens must recognize the sufferings of these individuals and the hard work that the social workers put in, especially with not much money or other resources that other professions or resources are provided with. Hopefully with eventual realization this can happen. This presentation really encouraged me to think broadly. Great job!
This is a relevant and timely topic today. We tend to forget that older adults are a vulnerable population; a population that once upon a time contributed to the National Gross Domestic Product. Indeed I believe the social worker can take the front seat in shaping policies that embrace programs capable of targeting social isolation and also ensure successful implementation of such programs in the various communities where older adult live. More awareness is needed in this area indeed. Great topic!
Great topic which needs more in depth conversation which can lead to change for the marginalized adult community. Most are underrepresented and left to deal with societal pressures. without the tools and support needed to succeed as they age..
