Mexican Abortion Ruling Lays Groundwork for Legalization

On September 7th the Mexican Supreme Court ruled that criminalizing abortion was unconstitutional, and established a legal precedent that could lay the groundwork for legalizing abortion across the country. The specific case heard by the court concerned a challenge to the criminalization of abortion in the State of Coahuila, immediately reversing the law in that state and providing the possibility to do the same across the country.

Remaining 2021 Disney Films to Be Released Only in Theaters

Walt Disney Co. announced Friday that the movies set to release this year will be shown exclusively in theaters before they are released on other platforms. The movie of the summer, Black Widow, much awaited by audiences had been released on both Disney+ and theaters. Much to the actress’s dismay, Black Widow’s release on Disney+ generated a revenue of $80 million, which was in violation of Scarlett’s contract.

Alaska Offers Free Vaccinations to Tourists

Alaska’s Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy announced this month that starting on June 1st the state will provide tourists with vaccines at four of their major airports. Any tourist (16 and older) that travels to Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, or Ketchikan airports will be able to receive their first dose of either the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine for free. Alaska officials recognize that some may not stay in the state long enough in time for their second dose, but the state will offer it to them if they do. This plan is part of Alaska’s effort to boost its tourism industry which was hit hard due to the pandemic.

Britain’s Digital Secretary Intervenes During Huge Arm-Nvidia Deal

California-based company Nvidia plans to acquire British semiconductor giant Arm Holdings for $40 billion dollars. Forbes reports, “Nvidia announced last September that it reached a deal with Softbank to acquire U.K. based semiconductor and software design company Arm Ltd. for $40 billion, making it one of the biggest acquisitions in tech.” Britain’s Digital Secretary, Oliver Dowden has published a Public Interest Intervention Notice (PIIN) due to his concerns about the transaction.

UK Treasury and Bank of England Consider Digital Currency

The Bank of England and the Treasury announced they were creating a task force to consider the potential risks and benefits associated with implementing a central bank digital currency (CBDC). The task force will be jointly led by Sir Jon Cunliffe and Katharine Braddick. Sir Jon Cunliffe is the Bank’s deputy governor for financial stability. Katherine Braddick is the Treasury’s director general of financial services.
