Matthew Bruccoli

Biography:

Matthew Bruccoli was born in 1931 in the Bronx, New York, to Joseph Bruccoli and Mary Gervasi. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1949 and later studied at Cornell University, where on of his professors was acclaimed author Vladimir Nabokov. Bruccoli also studied at Yale University, and, on campus, he was a founding member of the fledgling Manuscript Society, graduating in 1953. In 1960, he received a PhD in English literature studies from the University of Virginia. Bruccoli began taking interest in F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1947 after hearing a radio broadcast of the short story “The Diamond as Big as the Ritz.” He found a copy of The Great Gatsby and started to read it within the same week. Throughout his career, Bruccoli taught at the University of Virginia and Ohio State University before settling at University of South Carolina, where he earned tenure for several decades. Over the course of his career, Bruccoli wrote more than 50 critical books on F. Scott Fitzgerald and other literary figures. On October 5th, 1957, Bruccoli married Arlyn Firkins. They had four children together, Mary, Joseph, Owens, and Arlyn Bruccoli. Bruccoli worked at the University of South Carolina until being diagnosed with a brain tumor that caused his death.
