DULCE Minutes 9/23/16

 Welcome – Dean Bartoli

  • First, Dean Bartoli asked for everyone to do Introductions. Each attendee explained their year/occupation, clubs/advisor position, career interests/specialties.
    • From Introductions, a few points were highlighted:
      • Dean Bartoli emphasized that students should let Administration know about potential internship/career interests. He would be able to assist in obtaining representatives from different organizations to come and speak at the school. For example, Ryan mentioned his interest in the Red Cross, and Dean Bartoli explained there is an office in NYC and it would be fairly easy to invite a representative to come and visit.
      • For anyone interested in the German Club, speak to Aidan or Savi (you can also email koka@student.shu.edu)
    • Dean’s Welcome:
      • Over the summer, Dean Bartoli was renewed another 3 years.
      • When he began as Dean, he started a learning team. He wanted staff and students to engage with one other to understand what everyone is doing. His goal is to invite leadership as a process that we do together. We should all play roles together.
        • The logic of DULCE: excellence to exist in all aspects of the school
          • First, importance of accessibility (participate immediately)
          • Second, a sense of ownership
            • Classroom: done by the students as much as it is done for the professor
            • Ideas to increase ownership: Invite faculty to go to DULCE (to have them present about what they like, their interest/interview the professor. Also, maybe have a DULCE rep at Coffeehouse series)

Open Forum – facilitated by Aidan

*During discussion, Dean Bartoli advised for next time to bring a printed flyer to hand out during meetings (so students/faculty/staff can take a picture of the flyer).

Covered above.

New York Times Academic Pass – Savi

  • Weeklong access to NY Times for free — through the library
  • If you can’t find it, email Savi and she can send you the link (email: koka@student.shu.edu)
  • Library is trying out these passes first with the Diplomacy school, so be sure to take advantage of it!
    • Dean Bartoli: school likes to pilot but at the same time, not sure if it makes sense for us
  • Ryan: How exactly does getting the passes work?
    • Savi: Explained that you receive a log in that only last for a week.
  • Aidan: Can we use the passes for knowledge and also for research papers? Should this only be for academic papers?
    • Dean Bartoli: Use it for whatever you think you can use it for

Culture Change – Dean Halpin

  • The School, over the years, has benefited from student entrepreneurship (Diplomatic Envoy, Journal, Global Current — started and pursued by students). This has been student leadership supported by the school (example: United in Faith hosted by the Arabic Speaking Club and many cosponsors)
  • DULCE is not just faculty and staff led. We are leading together.
  • Wants to take this change in culture (more proactive collaboration between faculty, staff, and students) to be supported by DULCE
    • Want students to come to this school wanting to participate in the moving forward of the school, in owning their future
  • Collaborative leadership [students feel like they are part of the next 20 years]
  • Think about this when your leading your own organizations (Examples: How can I involve faculty & staff? How can I provide feedback to the school?)
    • Make the school what we want it to be
    • Willing to work with anyone about all of this and use this space to discuss this
  • Make our collaborative leadership unique about the Diplomacy School

Thought Exercise – Dean Bartoli

  • Dean Bartoli: Think about something that happened about the university that is really good and something that you want to make better. Write them down and then speak about it with a person close with you.
  • Dean Bartoli: The purpose of this exercise is to be attentive to design. When we having a meeting, we often focus on content but not enough on format.
    • Do not tell the rest of the people what you did but what your partner said. Sharing knowledge in this way means each person had to pay attention to what other said. It means that we start understanding how we are co-constructed.
  • Recommended Book by Dean Bartoli: Leadership Team Coaching by Peter Hawkins
  • Dean Halpin: This “coaching culture” can be very intentionally done here. Then, each attendee can bring that learning to other students. This also refers to what Patricia was saying: a process of leading students into leadership orientation.
  • Savi: Liked Dean’s reporting idea. Asked for highlights to be given (since the meeting was going over 3pm)
  • Highlights:
  • Santiago and Savi talked about languages in school. They would like to see more opportunities to learn more languages. Appreciated the BBQ surveys on languages.
  • Gabriela and Dean Halpin: Gabriela talked about award being an example of co-creation and collaboration [students leading with faculty members with support of school]. SHU’s UNA-USA won a national award within a year.
  • Gabriela and DH: Dean Halpin was inspired by Women of Diplomacy Leadership. She was happy with the amount of attendance at the first meeting and how everyone became involved in conversation about sexism and professionalism. Liked seeing that participants were not victimized by experiences but motivated to move beyond them.
  • Mark and Matthew: Mark is happy he made Ethics Debate team. He is happy he stepped out of his comfort zone.
  • Matthew and Mark: Both discussed how great it was meet with Usha Pitts (really nice level of accessibility on part of the Diplomacy school)
    • Written portion was very valuable info
    • Aidan’s Advice for Foreign Service Exam: Know the US constitution
  • Ryan’s grievance: does not like the school flag
    • Dean Halpin: Wasn’t it commissioned in 2009?
  • Aidan and Diana: Aidan explained that he was glad he went to the career fair.
  • Aidan: the FBI, DEA, Custom/Border Protection were all at the Career Fair. Encouraged students to explore these opportunities. Explained internship for Senator Menendez (in the not scary part of Newark)
    • Advice: Apply, apply, apply.
  • Dean Halpin: Reminded students about Cybersecurity Event coming up (information can be found in Enews).

  • Aidan: Next month, class reps will also be more applicable.
