About The Project

The course will focus on the growing black population in Europe as it slowly evolved from refugees from the trans-Atlantic slave trade, 19th through 21st century immigrants from European, Caribbean and African colonies, as well as a growing African-American expatriate and sojourner population. Particular attention will be placed on the connection of African-American, Caribbean, and African artists and intellectuals who sought either temporary or permanent refuge in Europe such as Langston Hughes, Franz Fanon, Claude McKay, Richard Wright, Leopold Senghor, Josephine Baker, and James Baldwin.

This is a seminar based PDR type course for graduate students and advanced undergraduates. The course will focus on England, France, Germany, Spain and Russia with guest lectures by faculty experts in those areas.
