What is G(irls)20?

Being selected as the United States Delegate to the 2014 G(irls) Summit has been firstly, one of the greatest accomplishments of my short life, and secondly extremely interesting due to the fact that when people congratulate me on this achievement they normally follow their praise with, “Now, what exactly does G(irls)20 do?”

G

The short version is that G(irls)20 works to economically empower girls around the globe through the bringing together of delegates from a variety of nations.

The long version is much more complex.

G(irls)20 is an organization which works to encourage young women to impact their local communities in order to change the social norms of their nations and finally the world. This, obviously, is no easy task. Like most international organizations, G(irls)20 requires a variety of ideas, personalities, individuals, and efforts on domestic alongside globalized fronts.

Following the format of the G20 this summit first have an application process for young girls between the ages of eighteen and twenty to submit their ideas, bios, and express what challenges they face as girls within their nation. One delegate is then chosen from each of the G20 countries, plus a representative from the European & African Unions, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the MENA region, to discuss how to combat political, social, class-based, and cultural norms impeding on the ability of the average woman to be economically sustainable.

Each delegate is then given a mentor and the support of the entire organization when chosen to create their own initiatives to combat the issues facing women in their home country. This is something I’m currently in the planning stages of and can’t wait to reveal later on. If you are also wondering about past delegate’s initiatives they can been seen here. At the actual summit, the delegates will be involved in work shops, debate, be given guidance, and will collectively create a communique.

In preparation for the summit I have not only been working with my mentor on my initiative, but have done an interview with Swiggtalk interview and am writing a piece for the Huffington Post. To be honest though, that is just the start of my duties but to find out more you’ll simply have to follow along with blog.
