December 2014: Career Resolutions

15 Career Resolutions for 2015

A new year can be a good time for a new position, promotion, or continued educational success. Focused on educating leaders in the field of higher education, the ELMP and HEGSA suggest thinking about the multiple ways in which students can start preparing themselves now for a fruitful career.

  1. Find a Mentor willing to give you time and beneficial advice for your future and focus you on your career development.
  2. Stay Organized with calendars, folders, and deadlines. Staying on top of your time and materials is key to personal and organizational success.
  3. Complete an Internship to gain more experience in a sector of higher education that you are interested in pursuing later in your career.
  4. Network with your classmates, colleagues, professors, and university staff. Networks are essential for establishing your career, collaborations, and future growth.
  5. Join a Professional Organization to gain experience, exposure, access to higher education news, conferences, professional development, policy making, and advocacy.
  6. Attend a Conference to focus on the improvement of your professional network and experience.
  7. Expand your Expertise by improving your understanding of the broader context in which higher education exists. Success comes to those who understand more than their own work.
  8. Catch up on News to understand the larger environment. Higher Education is not independent of local, national, and international news.
  9. Read Higher Education Literature to stay informed and up to date on current local, national, and international trends in higher education.
  10. Update your Resume to stay up to date. We do so much every day, it is easy to forget our duties and successes if we push this off until the last minute.
  11. Boost your Academic Credentials through research, writing, presentations, collaborations, and interactions with your faculty, classmates, and peers.
  12. Submit a Proposal to present your research interests at a local, regional, or national conference.
  13. Use LinkedIn to increase your access to networks and the likelihood that you will be found.
  14. Develop a 30 second Elevator Speech highlighting what you are looking for professionally and why so others can help you get to your future professional goals.
  15. Search for your dream job, and look at the qualifications so you can start building your skills now.
