Renewed interest in mindfulness and contemplative practices has benefitted our busy, consumeristic, and even violent modern world. But premodern contemplative texts suggest that the contemplative life was not open to just anyone. Ancient authors insist that you need to be a certain kind of person with certain kinds of virtues to pursue contemplation. Why? Are there dangers or limitations to contemplative practices today? Why think ethically about how we employ these practices? This talk combines ancient and modern insights about the ethical foundation of contemplation.
