“The Environmental Impacts of AI” – Discussion Panel

Nov. 7, 1:00pm – 2:00pm, in Teams

This panel will address the environmental impacts of, and related security, equity, and justice concerns around the expansion and ever-growing use of artificial intelligence, or AI. Four panelists will share their perspectives from such diverse areas as computer science, Catholic Social Teaching, pedagogy, law and governance, and the anthropology of science and technology. Remarks will be followed by brief discussion and audience questions.

Panel Participants:

Thomas Marlowe is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Seton Hall University, and holds Ph.D.s in each discipline from Rutgers University.

Dr. Kelly A. Shea is an Associate Professor of English and Director of the First-Year Writing Program (and former Writing Center director) at Seton Hall.

David Opderbeck is Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Gibbons Institute of Law, Science & Technology and Institute for Privacy Protection.

Katheryn Detwiler is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Science and Technology Studies at Stevens Institute of Technology.

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Jacob Weger, Director of the Environmental Studies program at Seton Hall.
