“The Impact of the ‘Anxious Generation'”

Oct. 10th, 9:30am – 10:30am, in Teams

The so-called “anxious generation,” based on the title of a new book by noted social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, (The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness), is also having a direct impact on the faculty who teach them and the staff members who support them. This impact can come in the form of a need for additional support in various areas, as well as increased anxiety and even burn-out on the part of faculty and staff. Responses to a survey of faculty conducted last year by the SHU Faculty Senate’s Faculty Development Committee spoke to these very concerns. In this CFD workshop, faculty from several disciplines, as well as the directors of Counseling and Psychological Services and Disability Support Services, will engage in a wide-ranging conversation about the impact of increased student support needs on faculty and staff, as well as how the university is meeting those needs or can better do so.
