Three Minute Leadership: The Casablanca Axiom
To: The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning
At a recent meeting a senior executive shared the impact that an environment of fear (or “shaky hands” as he described it) had on causing the company’s leadership team to make a disastrous financial decision. They had consciously departed from established decision-making processes to a knee-jerk reaction to a critical issue. He went on to share the horrific details and impact of the company’s actions.
When he had completed the detailed explanation, with a calm voice he asked: “Has anyone seen the movie Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart?” A number of hands raised. He thank asked: “Has anyone heard of the Casablanca Axiom?” No hands responded to his question. The executive said that there was one line that all great leaders should always remember to ensure a highly successful, valued-lead journey – in all decisions great and small. The axiom is beautifully captured in the movie song’s simple line:
“The fundamentals things apply as times goes by.”
May you also hold these words closely to you throughout your life’s journey, a reminded to live always out of your principles and values, from your own core… as time goes by.
Have a beautiful day and a magnificent week!!!
