In Brian Mitchell’s recent group mentoring session the group covered a wide variety of subjects. They began with asking the Executives about their personal mission statement and code of ethics.

Paul Tompkins shared that he lived his life with integrity, honesty, and compassion. Paul looks to spend more time doing the things that he enjoys. Paul put the word “reasonable” in his personable mission because he is honest, and he understands the need for sacrifice.

Kimberly Mills told the group that we need to live each day better than the day before. She explained the importance of being the best that you can be every day. Kimberly told the group not to get too tied up in the different goals (personal, professional, etc.) and to try a little more than the day before. Kimberly also told the group to trust their gut in tough situations, which is a valuable piece of advice.

Joe Quinn stressed the importance of serving to help others. He said that serving to help others adds value and leaves people better off than when you met them. Joe said to make sure you have a branding statement. A branding statement has a professional and personal aspect to it. Within this branding statement you should have a personal and professional personal statement that distinguishes you.

The group then went on to speak on how to differentiate yourself in an interview. The most important advice given was the STAR method (Situation Task Action Result). This shows what have you done, your effect on the situation, and what you did to influence the action. In an interview you should talk about successes and also failures to show learning, and you should always stay true to yourself.

The last subject discussed was project management skills. The executives stressed that you should come out with a plan of what you have to do, stretch out your tasks, and if someone else has a technique, try it. Time management plays a major role in projects, and you need to learn how to deal with procrastination.

The last advice given was to reflect, and recognize what you can improve on, which is a great technique for improving yourself.

Thank you to the executives for sharing their valuable time with us and teaching fantastic life lessons to the students!
