Founded in 2012 by Leadership Alum Mona Safar, Piratethon is the annual all-night dance marathon that benefits The Valerie Fund, a local non-profit that supports children with cancer and blood disorders. This year’s event continued the legacy of service, caring and community involvement at SHU, while raising funds and awareness for the patients and families served by this charity.

Coordinators of the event, Brooks Mencke and Sophia Joseph, reported that this year’s PirateThon raised $9,282.09! The event, running from 7 PM on March 1st to 7 AM on March 2nd, featured performances by the SHU Sapphires and cheer teams, FLASH [Filipino League at Seton Hall], NKN and more! Throughout the night there were line dancing lessons, Zumba, and various contests, such as a Pie-In-The-Face competition that gave dancers the chance to win gift cards and bags from local eateries like Above, Cold Stone, Stony’s, and Starbucks.

The last two years for the event have not only led to a wondrous contribution to the Fund, but also the Piratethon team has pioneered a dance marathon network to the wider New Jersey area. This year, marathons on behalf of The Valerie Fund have extended to Monmouth University, Seton Hall Preparatory School and the Academy of Saint Elizabeth.

Congratulations to the Piratethon team for all its dedication to the event and making it another successful year. We also would like to congratulate the Leadership Development Honors Program team for raising $3,030.10 ! Go Pirates, Go SHU!
