Important issue to raise. Thank you. I think some parents are behind even their elementary age children in social media skills. How can we better educate and train parents not just about this important issue, but on how to monitor the sites their children use and create filters to protect them.
Nice job Karla, I especially liked the recommendation that in order to protect our children we need to be constantly re-evaluating COPP. Every five years may even be to long, considering how fast things change.
Thank you for speaking about this issue, Karla. I think monitoring what children have access to online (and in general) and protecting them from being exposed to inappropriate content is very important not only for their safety, but for their development as well.
Thank you Karla, for bringing up this important issue. I agree that parents should be more educated and trained on how to monitor their children’s activities on social media and create filters to protect them. Additionally, I strongly agree that we re-evaluate our Children’s Online Privacy Protection (COPP) policy every five years to ensure that the regulations are up to date with the fast changing online environment. You had great points to consider.
I agree! Although a lot of the issues are on the regulations and how strictly the rules are followed, I think it ultimately comes down to the parents. I believe it is important to check up on the regulations, but it is the parents who allow their kids on these websites, and a lot of the time the kids are unsupervised.
Great job Karla! I was shocked to hear that the policy has not been updated since 2013! So much has changed and social media has become such a large part of people’s lives, especially children. I agree that the policy needs to be re-evaluated every few years to ensure the safety of children online.
I found this very interesting because while watching the video, I couldn’t help but think of all of the “family channels”, which are essentially parents exploiting their children for views. I also do agree that social workers should host a workshop that is accessible for all, whether it be in person at a local center but offered at different times/days or online via Zoom.
Interestingly enough, I was JUST having this conversation with a friend. I loved how Karla touched on the fact that young children from 2nd grade have access to cellphones, which also grants them access to social media. Youtube and other social media platforms are geared and should only be used by adults. As you mentioned too many children are exposed to adult content online, which is a huge safety issue. Great job, I think this is an important topic, and a conversation more people should be talking about.
Great Job Karla, I think that you have raised an very important issue especially in today’s climate. I think that you’ve provided a great recommendation by requiring parents’ email. Great Job
I think that you offer a really great solution to help protect the rights of children. Often times parents are trying to navigate an appropriate way to use social media themselves that they may forget to realize that their children are a protected population I think revisiting policy will be a great idea considering how often things change in our society. Thank you!
Great Job Karla! You can see that you’re very passionate about Children’s Safety. It is definitely an important issue, especially with the continuing takeover of internet and social media. Children are so much more advance than the older community, and with adults being so out of touch when it comes to internet life, children can be exposed to so many things.
I feel like a policy about this would be good but it’s difficult to expose these types of parents that exploit their kids since most of the time this occurs within the house.
Hi Karla! This is a great presentation on children’s safety online. Children are constantly exposed to dangers, especially when they can be online with no supervision. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act has not been updated since 2013, and it has been 10 years, which is unacceptable. There must be stricter laws and regulations on internet safety for children. Additionally, we must protect our children and not exploit them for internet fame or money. This was a really good job!
Karla, I think you touched on an important and growing issue in our online world. Something I thought was interesting was the statistic you brought up saying 25% of children are lying about their age online, which truly shows how little protection exists that contributes to keeping children safe on online platforms since the “preventative measures” of children getting online aren’t actually preventative.
Thank you for bringing attention to this topic because many parents end up exploiting their children online and it puts the Childs safety at risk as well as their mental health.
Thank you for discussing this topic, Karla! This is such an important topic to discuss as internet usage is only increasing and it seems that the age at which people are beginning to use it at is only decreasing with time. It is our job to protect these children, but as you noted we are greatly lacking in this. Thank you for bringing attention to this matter, I found your points to be very interesting.
