The newest big-name WNBA star has landed in Dallas after the Wings drafted Paige Bueckers with the first overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. Bueckers was the catalyst of the national championship winning UConn Huskies, becoming the historic program’s top scorer in the women’s tournament.

Bueckers’ collegiate career at UConn was nothing short of spectacular, despite being interrupted by an unfortunate knee injury that sidelined her for a significant portion of her sophomore season. The superstar guard averaged 19.8 PPG, 4.7 RPG, and 4.6 APG in 119 starts for the program. She also contributed on the defensive end, adding 2.1 steals per game and almost a block a game.
Her court vision is one of her standout abilities, threading no-look passes through tight defenses that leave teammates with easy scoring opportunities. She possesses a tight handle, allowing her to create space and drive to the basket. When called upon to score, Bueckers can do it at all three levels. Beyond the tangible skills, however, lies an understanding of the game, a basketball IQ that elevates her beyond her athleticism.
The hype surrounding Bueckers wasn’t just about her on-court ability. Her infectious personality, connection with fans, and her voice on social issues have made her a beloved figure. She represents a new generation of athletes who are not only exceptional talents but also engaging personalities. Her move to the WNBA will bring a boost in viewership and engagement, attracting both long-time fans and a new wave of admirers eager to witness her professional journey.
For the Dallas Wings, securing the first overall pick and drafting Bueckers is a franchise-altering moment. The team, which managed a 9-31 record last season, is in dire need of a true franchise player capable of elevating their competitiveness and drawing crowds. Bueckers arrives not just as a player, but as a potential cornerstone the team can build a championship-contending roster around. The expectations in Dallas will be high, but Bueckers has shown throughout her career that she thrives under pressure.
