It was a big week for the lab – Amanda and Rachel presented their honors theses at the Petersheim Academic Exposition, Alyssa won the Experiential Learning & Service Awards, and Sydney, Ella, and Alyssa were all inducted into Psi Chi! Congratulations to everyone on their accomplishments.
Alyssa Housley presents research on concussions and impulsivity at Eastern Psychological Association.
Alyssa Housley presented our poster “Do concussions make college students more impulsive? Neurocognitive impacts of brain injury” at the March 2025 Eastern Psychological Association conference in New York, NY. The poster, presenting preliminary results from Rachel Gerrie’s honor’s thesis, examines how concussions impact impulsivity and decision-making. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), the project investigates prefrontal cortical activity during decision-making. Congratulations to Alyssa for presenting at her first EPA and to Rachel Gerrie for leading this research project.
SHUCAN Lab members and collaborators presented at Psychonomics in New York, NY
Undergraduate researchers Rachel Gerrie (left) and Amanda Burns (right) presented our poster, “Are individual differences in boundary extension associated with differences in eye movements during encoding?” at the Psychonomics Society annual meeting in New York, NY. The poster was a collaborative effort with Dr. Helen Intraub and Dr. Irene Kan and summarized preliminary data collected by undergraduate research assistants in the laboratory. The poster was met with enthusiasm from attendees and Rachel and Amanda were able to give their well-rehearsed “short version” multiple times to a curious and engaged audience.
In addition, collaborators Michael DiCalogero and the Chrysikou Lab presented a poster, “Individual Differences in Within- and Between-Network Connectivity for Emotional Memory Examined Through the Cam-CAN Dataset”, summarizing ongoing work examining functional connectivity changes in aging.
Gracelyn Pensiero and Dr. Caulfield presented Gracelyn’s project at the 2023 Psychonomic Society annual meeting
Gracelyn Pensiero (Marist College) and Dr. Caulfield presented Gracelyn’s project as a poster at the 2023 Psychonomic Society annual meeting in San Francisco, CA. Gracelyn’s project found that people dislike occlusions in photographs, particularly if a face is occluded.
Talking about Boundary Extension at the Psychonomic Society annual meeting
Dr. Caulfield shared the results of our boundary extension collaboration with Drs Helene Intraub and Irene Kan, which found that people who are high in behavioral inhibition showed a reduced boundary extension effect at the 2022 Psychonomic Society meeting in Boston, MA.

Aidan Flynn presents poster at Psychonomic Society annual meeting
Aidan shared the results of our research study examining a shift toward a negative bias of semantic free association during the Covid-19 pandemic at the Virtual Psychonomic Society meeting.
Dr. Caulfield gives brief presentation at Psychonomic Annual Meeting 2020
Dr. Caulfield shared recent research studying whether behavioral inhibition modulates individual differences in subjective ratings of pictures and words at the 2020 Psychonomic Society virtual meeting as a brief presentation.
Dr. Caulfield presents poster at Cognitive Neuroscience Society annual meeting
Dr. Caulfield presented research with collaborators Dr. Kan and Dr. Chrysikou examining network connectivity and aging in the Cam-CAN dataset at the Virtual Cognitive Neuroscience Society annual meeting.
Neil Joshi presents poster at American Society for Neuroradiology
Neil Joshi presented a poster examining hemispheric asymmetry in spatial neglect following stroke at the Annual American Society of Neuroradiology conference.
