Children at the aftermath of Easter Rising in Dublin.
Children at the aftermath of Easter Rising in Dublin.

It’s the same old theme, since 1916. In your head, in your head, they’re still fighting…”-The Cranberries, “Zombie”

“Since 1916″: Connecting Contemporary Irish Music to Irish History” is an ongoing effort to preserve Irish history through song. The title of this project was inspired by the song “Zombie” by the Cranberries, which references the Easter Rising in its pre-chorus with the line: “It’s the same old theme, since 1916.” The refrain is meaningful: Ireland’s history has woven itself into its culture, especially its music.

“Since 1916” is intended to serve as a resource for audiences to learn about the rich history behind contemporary Irish songs. It is meant to be further developed in years ahead, as more songs and historical information can be added.
