May 2014: Seton Hall at AERA Annual Meeting

The following students and faculty members attended, presented or facilitated sessions at this year’s AERA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania April 3-7th. A big celebratory “kudos” goes out to the following individuals for representing our university and higher education department.

  • Katherine C. Aquino was invited to participate in the Emerging Scholars Workshop. Participants engaged with senior scholars in the field on such topics as articulating and advancing career goals, examining career options at different types of institutions, maximizing publication success, and building a long-term career. Participants received detailed feedback on their CVs and heard from deans and other university leaders about preparing for the hiring and promotion process at different types of institutions.
  • Dr. Rong Chen served as a discussant for a session titled: Economic and Financial Factors in College Access and Persistence: The Good, Bad and Terrible? The panel included researchers from The University of Arizona, Texas Tech University, University of Louisville, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Seton Hall University. Coincidentally, Dr. Kelchen represented our university as a panelist at this session and his accepted proposal was a dual effort (co-authored by Sara Goldrick-Rab) that focused on “Making Sense of Loan Aversion: Evidence from Wisconsin.”
  • Dr. Colleen A. Evans and Dr. Rong Chen were panel participants in a session titled The Many Perspectives and Understandnings of STEM. Their accepted proposal focused on the “Determinants of STEM majors choice: A comparison between community college and four-year institutions.” Dr. Evans is a recent doctoral graduate of the ELMP Department of Seton Hall University and is currently an employee at Dominican College. Other members of the panel represented The University of West Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology, Emroy University, Rutgers University and University of Maryland-College Park.
  • Reema Negi and Dr. Eunyoung Kim collectively presented a poster session under the topic of Globalization in Postsecondary/Higher Education. Their poster was titled the “Psychosocial Adjustment of International Students: Cross-Group Analysis of Exchange and Degree-Seeking Students.” Other researchers within this poster session represented the University of Louisiana, Arkansas State University, Iowa State University, University of South Carolina, University of Texas, and Columbia University.
  • Dr. Robert Kelchen was a panel participant in a session titled: P-20 Education Finance. His proposal focused on “Financial Need and Income Volatility among Students with Zero Expected Family Contribution.” Other researchers on the panel represented University of California-Davis, University of California-Berkley, University of Southern California, Salisbury University, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
