April 2016: Advice on Internships – Dr. Susan Arrigoni

ADVICE ON INTERNSHIPS DR. SUSAN ARRIGONI

Dr. Susan Arrigoni, the Internship Coordinator for the Department of Education Leadership, Management, and Policy, shares help advice and important tips when considering an internship in higher education:

Interested in Internship?

In the Department of Education Leadership, Management and Policy, the three-credit Administrative Internship courses, ELMP 8981 and ELMP 8982, provide the framework for higher education graduate students to build upon their existing foundation of knowledge while being immersed in the postsecondary field. The following discussion summarizes internship planning and deliverables in the Higher Education/Student Affairs Internship Manual.

If a summer or fall internship is probable, planning should begin soon. When thinking about engaging in an internship, it is suggested that students conduct research to help focus their placement search. Students are encouraged to think about their interests, skills, competencies, future goals, and existing network as well as current obligations and course credit requirements (150-180 hours) to help facilitate an internship that is both meaningful and feasible. In advance, students complete the Internship Placement Preference form and forward to the SHU Internship Coordinator, who serves as the intern’s faculty supervisor, for advisement. Once a prospective internship is secured, a student arranges a meeting with the host institution site supervisor to outline student objectives, propose assignments, coordinate expectations and discuss goals. During the meeting, a detailed learning plan is constructed, reflecting student knowledge and skills to be gained through a variety of learning experiences. The student provides for review and or completion the Internship Application, Internship Contract and Internship Supervisor Description forms.

A semester-long internship can be a very rewarding experience, serving as a ladder for student growth towards an enriching career in higher education. Some of the current students in the program are engaged in leading and coordinating the execution of higher education events, gaining experience in the field of career counseling and furthering an interest in student affairs and data analysis. If you are interested in completing an internship or have a related question, please do not hesitate to inquire.
