Global Health Governance (GHG) is seeking a Managing Editor to assist the Editor-in-Chief with the broad range of publication operations and management and provide day-to-day supervision for the Deputy Managing Editor and Web and Design Editor. While the role is an unpaid-volunteer position, it offers a unique opportunity for young professionals and scholars to become involved with an innovative and growing peer-reviewed journal at the forefront of global health and governance scholarship.

Global Health Governance is an open access, peer-reviewed, online journal that provides a platform for academics and practitioners to explore global health issues and their implications for governance and security at national and international levels.

The journal provides interdisciplinary analyses and a vigorous exchange of perspectives that are essential to the understanding of the nature of global health challenges and the strategies aimed at their solution. The Journal is particularly interested in addressing the political, economic, social, military and strategic aspects of global health issues.

The Managing Editor will be expected to devote approximately 5-10 hours per week to the journal (potentially more during high volume periods) and will assist with the following:

Peer Review Process

The Managing Editor will supervise and support the Deputy Managing Editor in the following tasks:

-Overseeing the management of day-to-day correspondence with authors and peer reviewers (working with Deputy Managing Editor)

-Coordination of the peer review process including identifying and expanding GHG’s pool of qualified peer reviewers

-Working with Guest Editors on the logistics of special issues (including the Fall 2012 Special Issue on Human Security and Health)

Publication

-Coordinating copy editing for each issue

-Ensuring that all manuscripts meet GHG style guidelines

Global Health Governance Blog and Website

-In coordination with the Editor-in-Chief and Web and Design Editor develop a medium and long term strategy for the GHG Blog, website, and social media

-Oversee publication of blog posts with Managing Editor and Web and Design Editor

-Developing debate series, blog context, and other web content in coordination with the Web and Design Editor

 

Communications

The Managing Editor will supervise and support the Deputy Managing Editor and Web and Design Editor with the following tasks:

-Responding to inquiries, permission requests, etc.

-Developing a coordinated communications strategy with Web and Design Editor and Managing Editor

-Coordinating GHG social media activities with Web and Design Editor

Funding Initiatives

-Researching grant opportunities and liasioning with potential donors

-Develop grant proposals

Qualifications

Required

-Master’s Degree with focus on public health, global governance, international relations, or public policy (PhD in public health, public policy, international relations/political science preferred)

-Demonstrated knowledge of global health policy and current events/trends affecting global health/governance

-Editing experience with peer-reviewed journals and/or publications

-Excellent editing and writing skills

-Strong research skills

-Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under tight deadlines

Preferred

– Experience working with blogs and social media

-Grant research and proposal writing experience

-Publications in peer reviewed journals

*Though the Managing Editor will primarily work remotely, candidates in the New York/tri-state are preferred.
