October 12 Meeting

Tonight was our first official meeting for the blog! Congratulations to current members for making this chapter possible.

As per the agenda:

Group Legitimacy

We reviewed our chapter’s standing at Seton Hall University regardless of Student Government Association (SHU SGA) recognition and decided that the chapter is worth continuing through the fall. In the spring, we will apply as an official organization on campus; until then, we will meet and contribute to European Horizons as a whole.

Blog Improvement

Members suggested we begin an events page for the blog once we’ve held on-campus activities. Additionally, we will discuss with the European Horizons’ overarching executives about starting a separate donation fund for our chapter since we will not receive funding from the SGA until next year.

DEYS Conference Prep

Our DEYS Conference attendee, Felipe Bueno, has agreed to vlog, blog, and take pictures when he flies to Belgium in November! We are excited to help and support him, and we created a date for our DEYS Conference discussion during the meeting – November 9. This discussion will revolve around Felipe’s specific topic so he can better prepare his policy recommendations for the conference.

Discussion: Trans-Atlantic Data Transfer Deal

Discussion was focused on the New York Times’ article “Europe Approves New Trans-Atlantic Data Transfer Deal” along the lines of the DEYS Conference. The discussion audio is attached here:

Events

Campus events are still pending. The president will be speaking further with the Sergio de Mello chair visiting Seton Hall in November, hopefully to hold a school-wide talk as well as attend one of our meetings and partake in student discussion.

Executive Board: Treasurer

The chapter still seeks a Treasurer for the spring semester. Given that we do not have a fund as of yet, it is not an imperative position, but a position that must be filled nonetheless.

Santiago Losada volunteered himself following the completion of Treasurer training at another club.

Wrap-Up

Our first blog-post meeting and group discussion has been a great success. Moving forward, we hope to attract other students interested in transatlantic affairs to join and give our chapter more diversity and legitimacy.
