Alumni Initiative Hosts “How to Successfully Navigate the Corporate World” Event
Written by: Megan Scime
On November 7th, 2016 the Alumni Initiative hosted How to Successfully Navigate the Corporate World. This event consisted of three breakout sessions and a cocktail hour. Alumni of the Gerald P. Buccino ‘63 Center for Leadership Development Business Honors Program shared the knowledge they have gained in a variety of fields including law, finance, government agencies, and marketing.
The breakout sessions included Dinner Etiquette, where students learned the proper way to sit, order, and eat their food in a business meeting session and quick tips such as ordering in the same price range as a host, and how to address ordering drinks. In the second session, Diversifying Yourself for the Workplace, students learned from alumni about the important information they need to know to help themselves stand out once they arrive at the workplace, and how to get the promotion they are working towards. Tips included “dress for the job you want not for the job you have” and “never be afraid to say you don’t know something.” In the final session, Feedback 101, the students and alumni acted out proper feedback sessions to help the students better understand how to give and receive constructive feedback.
The night was filled with insights and knowledge between alumni and students. The Alumni Initiative is extremely thankful for all of the alumni and student participation. It was a wonderful experience for the students, and they look forward to the next How to Successfully Navigate the Corporate World event.
