Three Minute Leadership: On Talking to Yourself

To:  The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning

How did a man in his fifties complete two triathlons back to back? How did he do it six times? What was it that gave him the drive, fortitude and mindset to accomplish these incredible feats?  In his blog post, The Best Advice I’ve Ever HeardJon Gordon shares his conversation with Dr. James Gills, the Ironman.

When asked how he did it, Gills told him: “I’ve learned to talk to myself instead of listen to myself … . If I listen to myself I hear all the reasons why I should give up. I hear that I’m too tired-too old-too weak to make it. But if I talk to myself I can give myself the encouragement and words I need to hear to keep running and finish the race.”

In her book, Lit from Within: Tending Your Soul for Lifelong BeautyVictoria Moran writes: “If you celebrate your differentness, the world will, too. It believes exactly what you tell it — through the words you use to describe yourself, the actions you take to care for yourself, and the choices you make to express yourself. Tell the world you are one-of-a-kind creation who came here to experience wonder and spread joy. Expect to be accommodated.”

It is your choice to speak to the positive in yourself, to hear words of self-encouragement – words that empower, motivate and inspire – which drive you to push your limits to what you believe you can be … and will be. You are a “one-of-a-kind creation.” Talk to yourself. Speak your story in words that fill you with passion, joy and excitement. You will change the world because you choose to talk instead of listen to the voice of the naysayer within.

Have a beautiful day and a magnificent week!!!
